A novel titled Slow Man (2005) written by J.M Coetzee reflects the paranoid toward society. Paranoid means being suspicious to other or society without clear reason and believing that others are trying to harm in some way. In this Novel, paranoid toward society is represented by the protagonist, Paul Rayment. He is a former photographer who lost his leg in the road accident. In this analysis, there are two actions conducted by protagonist about paranoid toward society. They are; refuse to take something that can change his appearance and hiding from society.
The reason protagonist refuse to take something that can change his appearance is he scare the society would mock him. The protagonist hates society because of he is a disable man. So do with the society, protagonist thinks the society would mock him as result of his disability. Therefore, the protagonist refuses to take some treatment and prosthesis because of he thinks he will be more different from the common human in society. He shows the projection about society after take some accident that can explained as his anxiety.
To hiding from society, the protagonist does not want to be famous with his photography works. He chooses to keep all of his old work with him and let another people discover his work after he dies. This action show the protagonist is afraid about mockery that comes from society. He is suspicious because the society would never accept him as the disable person. In his point of view, the society cannot accept someone who different with the majority people.
